Discovering Sustainable Denim: Brands Leading the Eco-Fashion Revolution in the Netherlands

Kings Of Indigo, a denim brand that positions itself as a pioneer in sustainable fashion, it is committed to crafting high-quality clothes with the lowest impact.

Their holistic approach rests on three pillars: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

At the core, Kings Of Indigo considers transparency the cornerstone of their sustainability strategy. They audit direct suppliers and publish the results yearly, share production locations publicly, and combat greenwashing in collaboration with Retrace which is a platform to map and manager supply chain more transparently.

Kings of Indigo avails of this partnership to provide useful information to customers via QR codes on garments.

Let's see how they embody the 3R pillars:

  • Reduce: They focus on timeless designs that can last a lifetime, rather than a season. Their care guide helps extend the lifespan of loved clothes. They also make sure to remove necessary packaging and to replace plastic needed for buttons for instance with a less harmful material such as the tagua nut that grows on palm trees

  • Reuse: Encouraging customers to repair and breathe new life into their items, promoting a circular approach with the 3-years free repair warranty worldwide.

  • Recycle: this principle is reflected via the brand's pledge to never destroy any unsold garments but to always find a different solution to give a new life to the same material and not send it to the landfills. For instance, you can find a collection of approx 36 items in their online shop which is fully made with recycled materials.


The collection includes jeans, pants, jackets, sweaters, t-shirts, dresses, and more. The jeans are available in various fits such as loose, straight, balloon, skinny, and tapered, catering to different style preferences.





MUD Jeans is another Dutch brand revolutionizing the denim industry with its circular economy approach. Established in 2012, MUD Jeans aims to reduce waste and promote recycling. The brand position itself as a front-runner in circularity, they offer a unique "Lease a Jeans" program, allowing customers to lease a pair of jeans for a small monthly fee and after a year decide whether to return them, keep them or swap for a fresh pair.

These returned jeans are then recycled into new products, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes environmental impact.

MUD Jeans uses GOTS certified organic cotton and advocates for fair working conditions throughout its supply chain, making it a favorite among eco-conscious consumers and it is also BCORP certified.

The collection includes various fits like skinny, slim, tapered, straight, flared and loose, I personally love their balloon leg series!






Founded in 2001, Kuyichi was the first brand to introduce organic cotton denim to the market. Named after the Peruvian god of agriculture, Kuyichi is deeply committed to sustainability and social responsibility.

Actually Kuyichi’s journey began in 1998 in Peru, South America. The founders, NGO Solidaridad, were exploring the cotton industry and were deeply moved by the pollution and poverty they witnessed. Determined to make a difference, they set out to create sustainable clothing made from organic and recycled materials.

Kuyichi focuses on timeless products that stand the test of trends and wear, emphasizing transparency in their supply chain. Let's dive into the materials they use:

  • Organic Cotton: Since 2016, Kuyichi has exclusively used certified organic cotton. Organic crops are grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or insecticides. This choice benefits the environment, communities, and our skin.

  • Cotton in Conversion: During the transition from conventional to organic cotton farming, Kuyichi supports farmers by using cotton in conversion. Although not yet certified as organic, this fiber promotes positive change in the supply chain.

  • Recycled Cotton: Since 2012, Kuyichi incorporates recycled cotton in denim fabrics. Cotton waste is collected, shredded, and re-spun into unique yarn. Recycling reduces water, energy, and chemical usage. They utilize waste streams from spinning, dyeing, and cutting processes.

  • Post-Consumer Recycled Cotton (PCRC): PCRC refers to using cotton from clothing that has already had a full life. After cutting off the top of jeans, the remains are shredded and blended into new yarns. This approach reduces landfill waste and minimizes water and chemical use.


Their online collection ranges from jeans to sweaters and t-shirts, for an overall of approximately 150 items, fairly priced.
