Elevate Your Wardrobe: Conscious Italian Brands to Embrace Today

Italy is renowned for its fashion design, yet many prominent brands still have strides to make in becoming more ethical and sustainable. However, some Italian brands are leading the way in promoting better practices for people, the planet, and animals, let's dive into some of these companies!

Opera Campi is an Italian brand that specializes in crafting high-quality hemp fabrics. Founded in 2017, they are known for their innovative materials like Butter Hemp (a soft hemp jersey) and Lanapa® (a blend of merino wool and hemp).

From the very start, Opera Campi's mission has been to develop the best in the world pure hemp, which is one of the most eco-friendly fabrics. It requires minimal water, pesticides, and herbicides to grow, making it a more sustainable option compared to conventional fabrics like cotton.

Hemp is also incredibly strong and durable, with a tensile strength that is three to eight times higher than cotton. This means hemp fabrics can withstand more wear and tear, making them ideal for long-lasting garments and textiles.

Moreover, hemp fabric is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, which helps keep you cool in hot weather and warm in cooler conditions and it’s also naturally resistant to mold and mildew. But the benefits are even more, such as it provides natural protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays, making it a great choice for outdoor clothing, and it has natural antimicrobial properties, which help reduce the growth of bacteria and odors.

At last but not less important, being a natural fiber, hemp is biodegradable and compostable, contributing to a lower environmental impact at the end of its life cycle.

The other innovative fiber created by Opera Campi is Lanapa®, which is a unique fabric blend of merino wool and hemp, developed using a patented twisting technology. This combination results in a material with natural elasticity and superior thermo-regulation, making it both innovative and sustainable.

Opera Campi emphasizes sustainability by planting two trees for every product sold and producing items on demand to reduce waste. They offer a range of 100% hemp and Lanapa® products, including sweaters, jackets, and scarves, all crafted in Italy and divided by summer/winter collection. Feel inspired to explore their collections, the VERT sweater and BARN hoodie are among my favorites and they ship internationally!

Artknit Studios is a modern knitwear brand that emphasizes sustainability and craftsmanship. They offer a variety of products made from natural fibers like linen and organic cotton, ensuring that their pieces are both eco-friendly and high-quality. Their collections include items for both men and women, and they focus on creating timeless, durable clothing.

Artknit Studios is deeply committed to sustainability. They focus on using durable, natural, and biodegradable materials to minimize environmental impact. When it comes to material originated by animals, the brand ensures the ethical treatment of animals by sourcing their merino wool from farms that adhere to strict animal welfare standards, ensuring that the sheep are treated humanely. They explicitly state that their wool is mulesing-free, a practice that is harmful to sheep.

Their supply chain is short and transparent, allowing customers to know exactly where their garments come from, introducing also the digital product passport for traceability of each item. They produce less and at a slower pace to avoid overproduction and waste and they offer a repair program to extend the life of their knitwear, encouraging customers to repair rather than replace.

I personally love what is called the Imperfect Selection collection, you can browse among approx 100 items that have been repaired or had minor issues during production and you can buy these products for a discounted price, on average 25%/30% less than the original retail price doing good for the environment at the same time as you are contributing to reduce waste by giving these items a second life!

Blue of a Kind is a fashion studio based in Milan and focused on upcycling. They create clothes exclusively from pre-existing garments and repurposed fabrics, emphasizing sustainability and preserving water resources. Their collections include jeans, trousers, jackets, coats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts, all made with a contemporary fit and unique style.

They offer a variety of jeans fits, including slim, straight, and relaxed. Each pair is crafted from pre-existing denim, giving them a unique look and feel, I literally love of of their models, and the colors are just so unique!

If you browse their denim jackets you can see that they often feature a mix of different denim fabrics, creating a patchwork effect. I really love the customization aspect offered by this brand as many of their denim pieces are one-of-a-kind due to the upcycling process, getting a truly unique item with its own character and history. Feel inspired to browse their entire collection which is made of approx 40 products, Blue of a Kind ships internationally and they offer a free for life repair service too!

CASAGiN is a brand that focuses on eco-sustainable underwear and clothing. They emphasize well-being, sustainability, and ethical production. Their products are made in Italy using natural, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly materials like beech fiber, GOTS organic cotton, recycled nylon, and biodegradable lace.

They use certified eco-compatible, natural, or recycled fibers to ensure high standards of health, safety, human rights, and environmental protection and they state that the fibers used come from sustainably managed forests that do not require artificial irrigation.

All products are made in Italy, with production facilities located within 70 km of their headquarters, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and for their beachwear and sports lines they use regenerated and recycled materials, including recovered fishing nets and plastics from the oceans.

My favourite pick of this brand is their lace collection but it is absolutely worth mentioning their Linea Assorbente collection that features eco-friendly and comfortable absorbent underwear designed for menstrual cycles and incontinence as all the 18 products are made from sustainable materials like organic cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell, ensuring both environmental responsibility and skin comfort. I really think this brand deserve a shout out for caring about women's daily comfort and protection!
