In the vibrant heart of London, a revolutionary fabric is emerging, promising to revolutionize the fashion industry at its core!

Developed by bio-textile startup Biophilica, Treekind™ is a groundbreaking material crafted from lignocellulosic feedstocks sourced from urban parks, gardens, and agricultural waste.
This bio-fabricated material, resembling faux leather, seamlessly blends fashion, biotechnology, and natural resources, creating a versatile fabric perfect for clothing, shoes, purses, and a variety of accessories.
Treekind™ stands out for its remarkable eco-friendliness when it comes to its application in textiles.
As you may know, traditional leather production is notorious for its hefty environmental footprint, consuming vast amounts of water and generating significant carbon emissions.
Just to give some concrete figures: a single kilogram of leather can result in the emission of up to 120 kilograms of CO2 and requires around 16,000 liters of water.
In deep contrast, Treekind™ boasts a carbon-neutral status and needs less than 1% of the water required for animal-based leather production.
Moreover, unlike petroleum-based faux leathers that contribute to the growing problem of microplastic pollution, Treekind™ is entirely biodegradable and plastic-free. This means it can break down naturally without leaving harmful residues in our ecosystems, thus protecting our waterways, food sources, and drinking water from contamination.
In my research to find fashion brands offering products made with Treekind™ material, I discovered that there are currently very few. This limited presence is likely due to the significant investment needed for companies to scale up production and the complexities involved in modifying existing supply chain processes.
These are the two brands I have confirmed are using this material:
BEEN London, a British brand that makes ethically-made bags and accessories. They have partnered with Biophilica to design a fully home compostable collection, consisting of a tote and a bundle of small leather goods including a keyring and coin purse, made using plastic-free leather alternative Treekind® which has been showcased as a prototype but it is not currently sold online. BEEN London is committed to eco-friendly practices, incorporating materials such as recycled leather, piñatex, recycled polyester, appleskin, recycled felt, regenerated nylon and recycled cotton.
For each of these materials, BEEN London provides a comprehensive explanation of why they are chosen, details the manufacturing process, and specifies the range of products available that utilize each material.
BEEN London offers a collection of around 50 items, priced from 100 euros for wallets to 500 euros for backpacks.
ID Genève a luxury Swiss watchmaker, supported by investors like Leonardo DiCaprio, has positioned itself as a leader in sustainable luxury watchmaking. The brand advocates a circular economy model and excels in using recycled materials, notably Treekind™ in partnership with Biophilica for watch straps. Their collections feature watches made from recycled steel and carbon fibers, offered in limited editions.
I hope I have inspired you to explore Treekind™ and keep informed about the latest developments from brands adopting this innovative material!
